2009 Regatta Report...

While Chandos saw consistent rain during the beginning of summer, our annual Regatta managed to part the clouds and make for a great day. We had a record level of over 400 participants (and another 150 onlookers), a record level of over 50 volunteers, and even sold out the bake sale and BBQ! Year after year, great enthusiasm is expressed towards our Regatta but this year certainly topped them all.

With the addition of a new Kids Zone, activities such as the Fish Pond, Toilet Bowl Toss, Ring Toss, Pin-the-Tail among others, allowed kids to show off their special skills in a zone dedicated just to them. It wasn’t hard to notice, as the amazing girls running this event were swamped with eager participants. Congrats on making this addition a hit.

Also worthy of mentioning was the return of our Mystery Event. In this case, commentary simply won’t do justice to those that dipped their hand into a disgusting bucket of flour, water, and dirt to find a hidden marble. And only the photos can adequately represent the careful patience of those that had to balance that sought-after marble on a spoon, transferring it to one-another without dropping it, all in the heat of competition. Patience and the will to get dirty was the name of the game here – congrats participants.

Now who wore the crowns of Lord and Lady Chandos? This year the top 3 teams from the Mystery Event had to nominate both a guy and girl to compete for the trophies. After the surprises of the Mystery Event, participants seemed anxious of what would be thrown at them this time. But Team Boone proved victorious, as the nominated Hannah and Spencer showed their superior wheel-barrowing skills! Thanks to everyone who participated in this series of events – we had some great laughs.

Not enough can be said about our Regatta. Friendly family rivals are at play every year, be it the Land, Swimming, Potato Sack, Tube, or Canoe races. Participants dive across the finish lines, spin in circles on their tubes, and sometimes, end up paddling to the turn-around spot, only to see themselves chart a diagonal path back in – that’s if they even finish the race at all! Not only that, but our Recycled Craft and Art competitions always showcase extraordinary artistic skills. I encourage everyone to show off their talent next year, whether you’re kids or older.

All of this would simply not be possible, however, without our gracious volunteers that year after year, make the Regatta what it is. Our sound system is lent every year; volunteer shirts and raffle prizes are donated; and our wonderful bake sale ladies, BBQers, lifeguards, photographers, and those that run the events are all people who volunteer their time every year on Regatta day so that we can enjoy a day in the sun with our lake members. Thank you sincerely to everyone who helps out in their own way! A huge thank you also goes out to Alex Forani, Director of Volunteers, and Kailey Auger, Director of Communications – these girls play an indispensible role, of which their title does not do justice. Volunteering at events, they also make sure everything is running smoothly, help in the organization leading up to the Regatta, and are also behind the new creative ideas of the Regatta every year. Thank you also to Jim  O’Shea, who despite passing the President’s torch to Bill Rasberry, still maintains an integral part of our executive and Regatta in particular. Thank you to the CLPOA executive for their support, and finally, thanks goes out to Johanna Thom who generously offers Lakeview Marina as our Regatta site.

Congrats to everyone for making our Regatta such a success!
